Garlan Receives Software Engineering Distinguished Education Award

The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) has named SCS faculty, David Garlan, winner of the 2017 IEEE Computer Society Technical Council on Software Engineering (TCSE) Distinguished Education Award.

The TCSE’s Software Engineering Distinguished Education Award is presented annually for outstanding and sustained contributions to software engineering education.

Garlan, a faculty member since 1990, has the lead the development of numerous curricula and courses on software architecture, modeling, and engineering. The TCSE noted Garlan’s pivotal role in the development and growth of the Master of Software Engineering graduate programs at Carnegie Mellon, pointing out that “This program is an international benchmark, having inspired many similar efforts, and, having influenced many others throughout the world.”

“As a founder of the Master of Software Engineering (MSE) program at CMU, David led faculty teams in the development of entirely new course offerings appropriate for professionals who are aspiring technical leaders” notes Bill Scherlis, Director of the Institute for Software Research. “Under David’s guiding hand, the MSE program has evolved into a suite of several high-caliber professional master’s programs and its reputation has attracted multiple international partners, including universities in Korea, India, Portugal, Bulgaria, and Australia.”

With this award Garlan joins his Carnegie Mellon colleagues Mary Shaw and Nancy Mead, who have also received significant recognition for their leadership in shaping the development of graduate software engineering professional programs at CMU.

Garlan, for his part, is both humbled and excited by the award. “It is, of course, a great personal honor to receive this award, especially in a world where our efforts as researchers tend to get primary attention and education is sometimes overlooked,” Garlan explains. “But this is much more than a personal honor – indeed, the award is more accurately about the Software Engineering Professional Programs at CMU, and well-deserved recognition of the efforts of the founders, faculty, staff, and students who have contributed to the programs over the past 25 years.”

The award will be presented to Garlan at the 39th International Conference on Software Engineering (ICSE), to take place May 20-28 in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
